Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Guilford County Schools currently operating remotely.  To keep students engaged in learning, the district is providing educator-approved lessons, assignments, videos and other digital resources online and is asking students and their families to log in to learn.

But an undeniable technology gap exists.

  • 65.7% of GCS students are in low-income households and may not have access to technology in the home.
  • 14.2% of Guilford County households lack internet connectivity.

In the spring of 2020, GEA  teamed up with local nonprofit Technology for the Future to help fill the gap. Technology for the Future offered a challenge grant of up to lower the cost of reconditioned laptops. With the help of generous donors, GEA  raised enough money to enable the purchase of 8,800 laptops.  The first 1000 laptops were distributed on March 23 across the district.  In the fall, donors helped GEA purchase another 1000 laptops to be distribute to GCS students.
