Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Guilford County Schools are closed until May 15, 2020. To keep students engaged in learning, the district is providing educator-approved lessons, assignments, videos and other digital resources online and is asking students and their families to log in to learn.
But an undeniable technology gap exists.
- 65.7% of GCS students are in poverty and don’t have a laptop or tablet at home.
- 14.2% of Guilford County households lack internet connectivity.
GEA has teamed up with local nonprofit Technology for the Future to help fill the gap. Technology for the Future offered a challenge grant of up to $700,000 to bring the cost of reconditioned laptops to $70.00 each. GEA is now raising money to enable to purchase of up to 10,000 laptops. The first 1000 laptops were distributed on March 23 across the district.
